About the Camp

 

Lindsborg Chess Camp is designed for chess players of all strengths and levels of experience ages 10 to adult who want to improve their game while enjoying the company of fellow chess enthusiasts.

Players under the age of 10 are welcome to attend with an adult escort. Campers and instructors will live, eat, study and

play together.

 

The Week’s Schedule

 

After check-in and orientation on Sunday evening, Chess Camp opens with a simul game with Grandmaster Yuri Shulman.

On Monday through Friday, campers will have three 90-minute chess sessions. In these sessions, students are divided into three groups - advanced, intermediate, and beginner with 8-10 members and assigned a supervising teacher who will be responsible for tracking their progress throughout the camp. A rotating in structional schedule allows campers to study with several members of the staff during the week.

Every afternoon participants will be playing one round of a G/60

tournament. Friday afternoon will be devoted to the awards ceremony during which prizes for winners in all competitions will be awarded.

Students will be supervised throughout the week by an experienced counseling staff.

Important Information

Registration: 5 p.m. on the first day of session in Coronado Motel lobby (305 Harrison Ave.)

 

Supervision:  Participants will be closely supervised both on and off the field by our trained staff of counselors and coaches.

Twenty-four hour supervision in motel.

The cost includes room (residence camp only), all meals, 2 color photo, fee for swimming pool, tournament fee, and instructions.

Since enrollment is limited, early registration is advisable to insure the session of your choice. An $80 deposit (of which $60 is refundable until June 15, 2002) is required.

 

Eligibility: Elementary and Secondary school students, college students, adults. USCF rating and membership are not required.

Grandmaster Yuri Shulman was born in Belarus (former USSR) in 1975. In 1994 Yuri Shulman became an International Master and Belarus Champion. One year later Grandmaster Shulman became European Junior Champion. With the Belarus team G. M. Shulman participated in three Chess Olympiads, Moscow ’94, Erevan ’96, and Elista ’98 as well as European Team Championship, Pula, ’97. G. M. Shulman helped to prepare Zsuzsa Polgar for her World Championship against Xie Jun.

During the last few years, G. M. Shulman won the U.S. National Open in Las Vegas (1-13 places), the Governor’s Cup in Sioux Falls (SD) ‘00 and ‘01; World Open ‘01, the Koltanowski Memorial in San Francisco ‘00, and American Open ‘02. As a Captain of the UTD team he won the Pan American Games.

 

Coach Zeb Fortman

 

After a 33 year career at IBM, Zeb Fortman is a full-time chess coach. He is also Executive Director of the Kansas City Regional Chess Council (KCRCC), instructor for the Kansas City Chief's Priest Holmes Checkmate chess club, Instructor for the Rockhurst University Community Chess Club, and Program Director/ Teacher for the “Be Your Best Play Chess” (BYBPC) program which operates in 18 schools in the greater Kansas City Area.

Zeb has been coaching over 20 years and playing in tournaments since 1967. He maintains a USCF Expert rating for over a decade.

 

Camp Director and Coach Mikhail Korenman

 

Mikhail Korenman is President and one of the coaches at the Lindsborg Chess Club and organizer of the 2001 and 2002 Lindsborg Rotary Open. Dr. Korenman was a regional junior chess champion in his home state in Russia, won a Little Sweden Tournament in 2000, and finished second in U.S. Open (Class A) in 2002.
